[UPDATED: 1/17/08: Final]
Here are the over all rankings for the 2008 MLS draft. I expect considerable revisions (tweaking) as I continuously review tape, watch combine and review my rankings over the next few weeks.
I’ve received this question several times, “What is the Pos ranking”?
Pos ranking and Over all ranking indicates the level or plateau. For example, midfielder David Roth is ranked 5 and defender Andre Sherard is ranked 6 (see below). If a team needs a defender than it might make sense to take Sherard even if I have Roth nominally ranked higher. However, it would be a step down to take Balc because he’s ranked 14.
The gaps show the amount of difference (i.e., a small gap – small level change).
I added Seq to show the sequential list of the rankings. (I’ll be adding this to the Position rankings as I review those).
I hope this explanation helps.
I’m sure that I’ve missed a player. More likely, I’m sure that someone feels that I’ve unjustly ranked a player than deserved (especially if I haven’t seen the player). I’d like your feedback.

I like the way you put this together. You seem to have alot of knowledge about the sport.

Just a commet on your 76th pick. He has been playing this season injured from a summer torn hip plexor. I was good to see how you noticed him. If you could only see him at 100%. Was NJCAA leading scorer in 2005. He played the season 70-80% and not at his best position. Wait til you see him in the pro’s. He has a tryout now with Charleston Battery but would like to be at the top level.

I only saw Patrick Baxter once (and he got red-carded)! See my notes under the forwards section.
thanks for the kind words.

wow! ive never seen a more in-depth list of potential mls players! excellent job!
my question is, are these players currently on the mls radar, or is this just a general rating list you came up with?
Kyle Richards (277) i think deserves a higher rating, likewise Abimbola Pedro (132)- i think he interchanges between left mid and forward. Diego Barrerra (89) is a solid pick from new mexico for me. he is absolutely strong in the air. Is sean sassano (appal. state) related to luke sassano (california)? it will be interesting if both get drafted. Victor Diaz (wisconsn) is a potential match winner, wherever he goes.
Happy New year!

I did read your notes under the forwards. You are accurate about what you say. I was sorry to see him get that card and it did cost the team. I liked reading that you would draft him. Good luck in the new year and hope you get to see Patrick play more at the next level.

nice read…but i do have a few comments to make…
i am a bit concerned about the draft process adopted by the mls teams. from what i understand (according to an mls source), most teams really dont have detailed information about the player they want to draft. a friend of mine who happens to be a reserve coach for an mls team explained to me that at the end of the season, the mls team (say team x) look at their overall performance, and decide what position they need to strenghten. team x may decide they need to shore up their defense, particulary on the right side. so what does team x do? from what my source explained to me, team x then looks at the catalogue of outgoing senior defenders (similar to this), from which they pick their player. with the exception of the players from nationaly-recognized programes (the Uconns, etc), it is almost impossible that the seniors would have gotten a good look at. the mls teams do not have sufficient tape on the players. worsestill, team x really does not get a chance to interact with the potential defenders in the senior list. in the nfl, teams invite potential draftees to their facilities, aside from having sufficient tape on the player. they have more than just position matches- they look for players with a certain age, height, size, etc. they even consider things like the players personal history, etc. this is not the case with the mls teams (for a plethora of reasons-some of which are understandable, but most are unacceptable). consequentally, there are a good number of players who are not properly assesed or given sufficient recognition.
on your list above, there are about 43 players that have been extremely overated (based on your assesment),of which 15 of them have been overated beyond imagination. similarly, there’s about 22/23 of them that have been extremely underated and 2 of these underated players are in my opinion one of the most gifted players in the class of 2008. now im not saying that drafting errors do not happen in other professional sports- we see teams in the nba and nfl make flawed errors with their draft picks- but the essential difference is that in these other sports, in most cases teams actually pick the best athletes, and figure out how to incorporate them into their teams.
good job tho!

To scofield2007 -
- Richards (Richmond) was pretty bad against GW.
- Pedro (GW) has athleticism. But he doesn’t play well with others and he has poor vision.
- Barrera (NM) while he can do a lot of things, ups isn’t one of the first things that I would think of. Saw him twice against quality opponents in ABQ (UCSB and Wash).
- Luke and Sean Sassano are not related (Luke is from California and Sean is from North Carolina). Luke’s younger brother, Evan played at Cal with Luke.
- I saw Victor Diaz make a killer free kick 2 springs ago against Maryland. He didn’t show me a lot at the Big10 tournament.
Thanks for the kind words.
I’m in the process of reviewing tape and re-assessing my rankings.

To wiredncaa –
My understanding of the MLS draft process is to get recommendations from either friends, former players, coaches to assess players. Then, as time permits, for asst coaches to go out and watch players in the fall. This is a spotty process at best. Mostly, you’ll see asst at the big tournaments (ACC, BigEast, Big10) and early tournaments (IU, NM). I saw several MLS assts throughout the year. Some are studious and serious about watching. Others are just chatting with their friends oblivious that a game is going on.
Also, reserve team coaches are usually the asst coaches.
I agree with you that MLS doesn’t spend enough money on scouting. I’ve had long conversations with one team and they would rather budget more money for international players rather than speculate on college players.
I’m not sure how you ascertained the following, “43 players that have been extremely overated “…
I think that my ranking system may not be as intuitive as I assumed. If so, let me I’ll try and explain it better.
thanks again!

It will be interesting to see who really prevails in the professional ranks. So many players ranked highly play in a system that works for them and /or they are on a high profile team. Speed, skill, and smarts are the base of success and very few players on the list have all 3. There are a lot of players that are at the combine that have no chance of playing professionally and a lot who should be there that are not.

hey joe! wow seems like the site is getting active once again..great job guys!
so after your comments on richards, diaz, pedro and barrerra, i emailed them individually and asked them to send compilations to me by post or email. as of right now, abimbola is the only one to respond, he sent me this 6:30 minute video of his time (at george washington i presume?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5pR_sF-2U4
the boy is good
judging by this video, ive come to this conclusion:
this young fella is good
he’ll end up being one of those guys who’s overlooked in the draft, and might work his way up the ladder
whoaa we might actually have been at the same victor diaz game a cuple seasons back. yes you might be right, coaches who have monitored him say he has probably lost passion with time, others say it is due to a naggin groin injury, oh well
thanks for clarifying the sessano ‘brothers’ have we had two brothers drafted in the same pool in recent memory? would be a nice piece of ‘did you know’ memorabilia, i dunno!
NB: to some extent i agree with wiredncaa, but wiredncaa, can you give us more insight as to which players in your opinion have been badly rated and vice versa? i happen to believe joe list is relatively accurate
